On the El Tatio Geysers tour, we will leave San Pedro de Atacama early in the morning and set off towards the Altiplano, going up the hills and mountains of the Andes. We will arrive at El Tatio Geysers after an hour and a half to find a one-of-a-kind natural sight in the world, with 80 steaming geysers at an altitude of 4,200 meters (13,780 ft.). With this natural scenery as our backdrop, we will enjoy a replenishing breakfast and then go explore the geothermal camp where we will be surrounded by countless plumes of steam. After this, we will visit the Pozón Rústico (thermal springs) inside the geothermal camp.
We will stop at the Putana River on the way back to San Pedro de Atacama to observe the native flora and fauna of the area. Then, we will make a stop in the village of Machuca, where you can buy llama anticuchos (skewered meat), empanadas, and other traditional food from the region.
*The age restriction of this tour is set by the community that runs the geothermal park, and undortunately there are no exceptions to this.
*The average minimum temperature during the summer is -6 °C (21.2 °F), and -20 °C (-4 °F) in winter, so we recommend bringing warm clothing.
*You must stay in marked trails and it is prohibited to go off the trail. You will be at risk of falling into boiling water if you do not follow these instructions.
*Part of this tour occurs at an altitud of 4,000 meters (13,123 ft.), so we recommend taking the tour at the end of your stay in San Pedro de Atacama.
*The tour to El Tatio Geysers does not include a visit to the Puritama Hot Springs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the differences between the standard tour and the superior tour?
The main difference between the standard tour and superior tour is the size of the group. While the standard tour is made in group of 15 to 20 passengers, the superior tour is made in groups of 4 to 9 people. This fact increases the staying times in the places and reduces the waiting times to go from one place to another, considering that it is used a smaller vehicle. In addition, it improves the personalised service of the guide, giving more attention to the passengers’ requirements. On the other hand, the superior tour has a more varied meal service than the standard tour.
How far in advance should I book the tour?
We receive bookings until 48 hours in advance. However, we have limited spaces and always are subject to availability, so our recommendation is to make the booking as far in advance as possible.
What days of the year can I make this excursion?
This excursion can be made every day of the year, except for January 1 and December 25.
What kind of vehicles are used in this tour?
The vehicle will depend on the size of the group, having a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (or similar) or a Volare (or similar).
What does include breakfast?
Breakfast includes tea, coffee, milk, juice, bread, ham, cheese and jam.
Which is the maximum altitude reached in this excursion?
The maximum altitude reached is 4200 m. For a good acclimation, our recommendation is to eat a light meal and drink lots of water the previous days to the excursion.
Is it possible to bathe in the pozón rústico?
Yes, it is possible, as long as the pozón rústico is enabled, which we will know during the visit, once we are in the geothermal field. Because of this, our recommendation is you to bring your bathing suite, towel and flip-flops.
