The journey begins at early morning from San Pedro de Atacama to the Altiplano, going up through the hills and mountains of the Andes. After 1 hour and a half, we will arrive to El Tatio Geysers, a unique natural spectacle in the world, with 80 steaming geysers at 4,200 meters high. In this natural scenery, we will enjoy a breakfast to recover our energies for going over the geothermal camp, surrounded of many steam columns. Then, we will visit the Pozón Rústico, where we will take a thermal bath for about 40 minutes.
Back to San Pedro de Atacama, we will have a stop in the Putana River, where we will observe the native flora and fauna of the area; then, we will make a stop in Machuca town, where it is possible to buy lama anticuchos (little pieces of meat pierced by a small bar), empanadas and other traditional food from the area.
*The age restriction of this tour is defined by the community that administrates the geothermal park, not having the possibility of exceptions.
*The average minimum temperature for the place during the summer is -6 °C, and during the winter is -20 °C, so our recommendation is to bring warm clothing.
*You must obey the demarcated trails; it is forbidden to leave them. If you do not obey this instruction you will be at risk of falling to boiling water.
*Part of this tour is made above 4,000 meters high, so our recommendation is to take it at the end of your stay in San Pedro de Atacama.
*The tour does not include a visit to the Puritama Hot Springs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the differences between the standard tour and the superior tour?
The main difference between the standard tour and superior tour is the size of the group. While the standard tour has a maximum number of people that can reach 20 passengers, the superior tour has a maximum of 9 people. This fact increases the staying times in the places and reduces the waiting times to go from one place to another, considering that it is used a smaller vehicle. In addition, it improves the personalised service of the guide, giving more attention to the passengers’ requirements. On the other hand, the superior tour has a more varied meal service than the standard tour.
How far in advance should I book the program?
We receive bookings until 48 hours in advance. However, we have limited spaces and always are subject to availability, so our recommendation is to make the booking as far in advance as possible.
What days of the year can I make this excursion?
This excursion can be made every day of the year, except for January 1 and December 25.
What kind of vehicles are used in this tour?
The vehicle will depend on the size of the group, having a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (or similar) or a Volkswagen Volare (or similar).
What does include breakfast?
Breakfast includes tea, coffee, milk, juice, bread, ham, cheese and jam.
Which is the maximum altitude reached in this excursion?
The maximum altitude reached is 4200 m. For a good acclimation, our recommendation is to eat a light meal and drink lots of water the previous days to the excursion.
