What to bring

  • A 40 to 70 liter backpack for all the circuit.
  • Waterproof jacket and pants (Gore-Tex of similar).
  • Polar warm clothes (Polartec or similar).
  • Thermal clothing (first layer).
  • Short and long sleeved T-shirts.
  • Waterproof mountain boots (must cover the ankle).
  • Enough batteries (there is no energy to charge electronic devices in te road).
  • Flip-flops (for showers, rest and river crossing, it it were necessary).
  • Flashlight.
  • Towel.
  • Winter hat and gloves for cold temperatures.
  • Cap to protect yourself from the sun.
  • Sun block.
  • Sunglasses.
  • Camera.
  • Personal first-aid kit.
  • Water bottle (Nalgene or similar).
  • Ziploc bags or similar (to store the garbage).

Itinerary

Let's ascend the highest mountain of Peru with this South Huascarán climb of 7 days, which will give us the chance to live the adventure in a mountain complex of three peaks, reaching the summit of the highest of them.


Day 1: Huaraz – Pashpa – Base Camp

  • At 7:00 am we will leave Huaraz.
  • We will be heading to the north, to the Alley of Huaylas.
  • Our first destination will be Yungay, and then we will continue the route to Musho, at 3,050 m high.
  • We will get to the Huascarán base camp, at 4,200 m high.
  • Dinner and rest.


Day 2: Base Camp – Moraine Camp

  • Breakfast at 8:00 am.
  • We will break camp and then walk to the Huascarán Moraine Base Camp, at 4,850 m high.
  • Here, we will have lunch and spend the afternoon to relax and see the sunset in the mountains.


Day 3: Moraine Camp – Camp One

  • Breakfast at 8:00 am.
  • Break camp and advance by the rocks to the glacier's entrance.
  • We will make an ascent to reach the Huascarán Camp One, at 5,350 m high.
  • After a 5 hours trek and climbing we will arrive at the Camp One to spend the night.


Day 4: Camp One – Camp Two

  • Breakfast at 6:00 am.
  • We will go to the gutter, route that will take us to the Huascarán camp Two, at 6,010 m high.
  • Here we will set up camp, have dinner and enjoy the view of the sunset before sleeping.


Day 5: Camp Two – Summit – Camp Two

  • This day begins at 12:00 am with the breakfast.
  • We will walk by ice and snow sidewalks during 7 hours until reaching the summit, at 6,768 m high.
  • In this place we will watch the Cordillera Blanca in all its glory, if the weather conditions allow it.
  • Then, we will begin a rappelling descent to follow the same route we used to reach the summit to the Huascarán Camp Two.
  • After a 5 hours journey, we will rest and spend the night.


Day 6: Camp Two – Camp One – Moraine Camp

  • Breakfast at 6:00 am.
  • We will break camp and begin the descent to the Huascarán moraine, passing by the camp One.
  • We will arrive at this place after 6 hours of journey and we will spend our last night.


Day 7: Moraine Camp – Musho – Huaraz

  • Breakfast at 8:00 am.
  • We will set up our things and the equipment to go back in a 5 hours hike.
  • We will pass by the Base Camp, where we will move the equipment to Musho town.
  • Here we will take the bus to Huaraz in a 2 hours trip.
