Experience the magic of Chiloé Island with this full-day tour to Ancud and the Puñihuil Penguin Colonies from Puerto Varas, combining wildlife, culture, and history.
We will travel to Pargua, where we will board the ferry across the Chacao Channel. Upon arrival in Chacao, you will see the traditional wooden architecture made of native alerce wood, typical of the region.
You will then continue toward the coast to board a boat to the Puñihuil islets, where both Magellanic and Humboldt penguins coexist — the only place in the world where this happens. From about 160 feet (50 m) away, you will enjoy this unique natural spectacle.
You will then visit Ancud, a historic city where you will explore the San Antonio Fort, built in the 18th century, as well as heritage churches, the Main Square, and the lively Municipal Market with local crafts and food.
At the end of the day, we will return to Puerto Varas with unforgettable memories of Chiloé’s wildlife and cultural heritage.
*If your accommodation is an Airbnb or the Hotel Casa Azul, we will have to set a meeting point to begin the tour, because the pickup is not made in this kind of places.
*The end time of the tours may be extended up to 2 hours on long weekends, holidays and dates with a lot of passengers.
Although the season runs from mid-October to mid-March, the largest number of penguins can be seen during December and January, once the mating, nesting, and incubation period has passed. By February, sightings decrease until the end of the season.
