You will begin this Tangata Manu tour by visiting the Rano Kau volcano, located at the southwestern tip of Rapa Nui, one of the three large cones that make up the island's surface. Here you will enjoy panoramic views while learning about its sacred significance.
You will then visit Orongo, an archaeological site located at the top of the Rano Kau volcano, which was a ceremonial village where the cult of the god Make-Make and the Tangata Manu (birdman) competition were celebrated.
You will continue the tour by visiting Vinapu, an archaeological complex located on a large esplanade on the island's southern coast, where the remains of three platforms have been discovered. Here, as at other ceremonial centers, all the moai were knocked down around the 18th and 19th centuries during wars between the island's various clans.
You will visit Puna Pau, a small extinct volcano located about 7 kilometers northeast of Hanga Roa. Its name refers to a spring or water well that must have existed nearby. This site is known as the pukao quarry.
You will also visit the sacred site of Ahu Akivi, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The site features seven moai, all of the same shape and size, and is also known as a celestial observatory erected around the 16th century.
Finally, you will explore Ana Te Pahu, the largest cave on the island, over 7 km long. It served as a refuge for ancient inhabitants. Banana trees and other plants grow inside.
