Itinerary

Beginning: Day 1 at 5:00 am at your hotel in Cusco.

End: Day 4 at 8:00 pm at your hotel in Cusco.

Day 1: Cusco – Calca – Lares – Huacahuasi.

We will begin this tour with the bus trip through the Sacred Valley, between the Peruvian Andes and the jungle, where you will be surrounded by numerous rivers that descend through the mountains, small valleys, numerous archaeological monuments and indigenous communities. You will pass through the town of Calca at 2940 m altitude. After four hours you will arrive at the Lares valley, at 3,200 m above sea level, a paradise with beautiful glacial lagoons. Here you can visit the thermal baths and have lunch. Then you will begin a 4-hour walk to reach the Huacahuasi camp, at 3600 m high, where you can have dinner and rest in the tent.

Day 2: Huacahuasi – Abra Ipsay – Patacancha.

After breakfast, you will begin the walk towards Abra Ipsay, at 4480 m altitude. Along the way, you will be able to see the communities that inhabit the place, with the colorful clothing of the people of Lares. Then you will arrive at the Ipsaycocha lagoon, where you can have lunch and rest for a moment. Then you will descend to the community of Patacancha, where the second camp is located. Finally you can have dinner and rest in the tent.

Day 3: Patacancha – Willoq – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes.

After breakfast you will begin the descent towards Willoq, where its Quechua community keeps its ancestral customs and traditions alive, such as its textiles, ceremonies and agricultural activities. You will continue your tour visiting towns and archaeological remains such as Qocachapata and Pumamarca. Once in Ollantaytambo you will have time to have lunch and rest. Then you will board the train to Aguas Calientes. Here you will spend the night in a hostel.

Day 4: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco.

You will begin your trip to Machu Picchu early in the morning to be able to see the sunrise from above. Here you will have a 1-hour guided tour of the citadel and then you will have free time to walk around and explore the area. You can also climb Machu Picchu Mountain or Huayna Picchu (not included). Finally you will return by train to Ollantaytambo, where the transfer will take you back to Cusco to your respective accommodation.

Visit to the archaeological site

To enter to Machu Picchu archaeological site, you must have the so-called Llaqta Machu Picchu entrance ticket. Remember that, in case you select a program without entrance fee, you can buy it in the Ministerio de Cultura website.

The entrance will give you access to the archaeological site following one of its 4 circuits, which you will have to choose once you are in the citadel entrance:

  • Circuit 1: high and low part of the archaeological site, as well as the platforms and terraces area for 3 hours.
  • Circuit 2: high and low part of the archaeological site, as well as the routes to the Inti Punku and the Inca’s Bridge for 4 hours.
  • Circuit 3: low part of the archeological site including the agricultural area, Temple of the Sun, Inka House, Sacred Rock, and Archaeological Reserve for 1 and a half hours.
  • Circuit 4: low part of the archeological site including the agricultural area, Temple of the Sun, Inka House, Sacred Rock, and water mirrors for 2 hours.

Our recommendation for you to tour the citadel is choosing the circuit 2, because it will allow you to visit a bigger number of attractions inside Machu Picchu and taking the classic pictures. On the other hand, in case you decide add the visit to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain as an optional service, you will have less time in the citadel, depending also on the time in which your visit to one of the two mountains is confirmed.

In case we cannot confirm the visit to the mountain as early as possible, the only possibility to visit the citadel will be with circuits 3 and 4.
