Itinerary

Beginning: Day 1 at 4:30 am at your hotel in Cusco.

End: Day 4 at 11:45 in downtown Cusco.

Day 1: Cusco - Mollepata - Marqoq'asa - Soraypampa (8.7 miles of trek, 5 hours). We will pick you up at your hotel to take our transportation and leave Cusco to Mollepata, place where we will be able to have breakfast. In addition, we will deliver the luggage we want the herder to take and will meet the person who will guide us by the tracks during the next four days. After listening some directions, we will take our vehicle again and go to Marqoq'asa, place where we will start our trek. We will have the first views of the mountain landscape, if the weather allows it, while we advance to our first campsite: Soraypampa. Here, we can rest, settle down, have lunch and then start a 1 and half hour’s trek to the Humantay Lagoon, located at 13,451 ft. of altitude and from where you can see a glacier with the same name, if he clouds allow it. After that, we will return to rest, have dinner and get ready to sleep.

Day 2: Soraypampa – Abra Salkantay – Chaullay (13.7 miles of trek, 10 hours). We will get up very early so we can have breakfast and prepare our things to leave with the first lights in the morning. We will begin the trek by a ravine between the mountains that will take us to the Abra Salkantay, the highest point of our trek at 15,091 ft, of altitude, from where we will be able to have views of the Humantay Glacier and the Salkantay snow-capped mountain. After a small ceremony to thank the Apu Salkantay, we will continue walking to Huayracpampa, where we will make a pause to have lunch and get some rest.

During the afternoon, we will continue to our next campsite and we will see how the landscape changes from lower mountain temperatures to warmer temperatures of the pre-jungle. We will reach Chaullay Campsite where we will rest and have dinner to recover energy for the next day.

Day 3: Chaullay – Sahuayaca Beach – Aguas Calientes (6.8 miles of trek, 5 hours). We will have breakfast early so we can begin the trek of the day, continuing by this new landscape different to the one in the mountain. We will have explanations about the flora of the area, and we will see coffee and quinoa plantations, while we advance to Sahuayaca Beach. Here we will have our first lunch and then we will take our vehicle, which will take us to Hidroeléctrica. In this place, we will leave our things and will take only what is necessary for the next day, so when we come back, we pick them up to take the bus. From this place, we will walk for the train rail to Aguas Calientes, where we will settle down in our corresponding accommodations. Then, we will gather for dinner and receive the last instructions of our guide for the next day.

Day 4: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco. Today we will get up particularly early, so we can have breakfast before taking the bus, or we take a box lunch with us to eat after climbing the stairs to the Machu Picchu archaeological site entrance. In this place, we will gather with our guide, with whom we will have a 1-hour tour of interest data about this place. After that, we will have time to go over the rest of the places inside it. The recommendation is leaving the place at 10:00 am to begin walking towards Hidroeléctrica, without need of passing by Aguas Calientes again. That way you buy some time and get there to take the bus right on time to go back to Cusco, leaving Hidroeléctrica between 2:00 pm and 2:30 pm. We will not make any stops until reaching the San Francisco Square in Cusco, where our tour ends.

Visit to the archaeological site

To enter to Machu Picchu archaeological site, you must have the so-called Llaqta Machu Picchu entrance ticket. Remember that, in case you select a program without entrance fee, you can buy it in the Ministerio de Cultura website.

The entrance will give you access to the archaeological site following one of its 4 circuits, which you will have to choose once you are in the citadel entrance:

  • Circuit 1: high and low part of the archaeological site, as well as the platforms and terraces area for 3 hours.
  • Circuit 2: high and low part of the archaeological site, as well as the routes to the Inti Punku and the Inca’s Bridge for 4 hours.
  • Circuit 3: low part of the archeological site including the agricultural area, Temple of the Sun, Inka House, Sacred Rock, and Archaeological Reserve for 1 and a half hours.
  • Circuit 4: low part of the archeological site including the agricultural area, Temple of the Sun, Inka House, Sacred Rock, and water mirrors for 2 hours.

Our recommendation for you to tour the citadel is choosing the circuit 2, because it will allow you to visit a bigger number of attractions inside Machu Picchu and taking the classic pictures. On the other hand, in case you decide add the visit to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain as an optional service, you will have less time in the citadel, depending also on the time in which your visit to one of the two mountains is confirmed.

In case we cannot confirm the visit to the mountain as early as possible, the only possibility to visit the citadel will be with circuits 3 and 4.
