Three kilometers from Caleta Tortel, at the mouth of the Baker River, lies the Island of the Dead. This site is a historic and emblematic monument, part of a series of fjords and channels between the Northern and Southern Ice Fields, a witness to the arrival of the first settlers who inhabited the Baker River basin with the purpose of extracting cypress wood from Las Guaitecas.
On its surface we can find 33 wooden crosses, believed to be the remains of a series of individual graves dating back to 1906, corresponding to the bodies of approximately 120 workers from the Compañía Explotadora del Baker. While there is no official version of the cause of the deaths, there are various theories.
As you walk along the island's walkways through a native forest, you will learn about the different stories and theories surrounding this island, while also being captivated by the views of the archipelago's islands.

Very flexible booking as I accidently chose the morning tour when I wanted the afternoon. They accommodated me without any issues. I was also the only one on the tour, so it's nice to see that they will still take a single person out, when many agencies won't do that.
